The Life and Art of Betty Lou Nichols

The name Betty Lou Nichols is associated mostly with the popular head vases of the late 1940s and 1950s. Yet Betty Lou also made a variety of figurines and paintings as well.

Visit the La Habra Historical Museum, 215 E. La Habra Blvd, La Habra and learn about this local artist who operated her ceramics business in La Habra from 1945-1962.

View some rare art pieces that have been obtained by the museum for this exhibit.

The Life and Art of Betty Lou Nichols, opens January 7 and runs through March 31, 2012.

There is no charge for admission. The museum is open on Saturdays from 12-4 p.m.

A Muckenthaler History Day at the LHHM

The Swamp Lily is here at the museum! It is wonderful to have a living artifact that represents a significant era of La Habra and the determined pioneers who settled in the area.

The lily and the plaque were generously donated to the museum by Launer family members.

It is now in its dormant stage, but stop by and take a look at the Swamp Lily, a direct (and living) tie to La Habra's past, and the beautiful plaque.

In 1898 John and Anna Launer and their sons traveled by train from Highland, Illinois to settle in La Habra with other Swiss families.

There was an accident in Arizona and the Launers' freight car was damaged.

This Swamp Lily is a descendant of the original plant saved from the wreck.

The plant has persevered through the years thanks to the loving care given by generations of family members, and now the Swamp Lily is back on the original 20 acres once owned by the Launer family.

Christmas with Betty Lou Nichols

Our new changing exhibit, Christmas with Betty Lou Nichols, features the La Habra artist's distinctive Christmas ceramics, and also some of her other art work.

Betty Lou Nichols started creating ceramics in her parent's backyard in La Habra in 1945. By 1949, she employed 30 full-time employees.

Unfortunately, Betty Lou's designs could not be copyrighted and, in 1962, she had to close her shop, Betty Lou Nichols Ceramics, due to the low-cost Japanese replicas flooding the market.

However, she began painting and we are fortunate enough to be able to display a few of them.

Maybe you are wondering... what is the definition of a museum?

According to the Online Etymology Dictionary, the word museum first appears in the 1610s in reference to "the university building in Alexandria" (look up the Great Library of Alexandria.)

It comes from the Latin museum for "library, study, learned occupation," and from the Greek mouseion for "a place of study or library," and originally "a seat or shrine of the Muses" (Mousa for "Muse.") The earliest use in reference to English institutions was of libraries (e.g. British Museum.) It was first recorded in the sense of "building to display objects" in the 1680s.

Current definitions are:

A museum is a non-profit, permanent institution in the service of society and its development, open to the public, which acquires, conserves, researches, communicates, and exhibits the tangible and intangible heritage of humanity and its environment for the purposes of education, study and enjoyment.

An institution devoted to the procurement, care, study, and display of objects of lasting interest or value; a place where objects are exhibited.

This means that a museum can be a building dedicated to the display of art, history, science, or technology, as well as an aquarium, a zoo, or a botanical garden.

Collected items, therefore, can be living objects.

The La Habra Historical Museum will soon be dedicating a plaque and a Swamp Lily that originally came across the prairie in the 1800s with the Launer family and planted on the site of our museum. The lily will be a living artifact of the museum; another one of our historical objects that ties the past to the present.

A big "Thank You" to the La Habra High School Class of 1960's 50th Reunion for the excellent changing exhibit we have all enjoyed over the last several months. The last day to catch it will be Saturday, January 22, 2011.

We are looking forward to working with the La Habra High School Class of 1961's 50th Reunion committee for the September changing exhibit.

We are currently engaged with the next changing exhibit, tentatively titled Social Institutions of Early La Habra. It will introduce several of the early clubs and will focus on some clubs that are still active today.

Several local community groups, including Our Lady of Guadalupe and the Methodist Churches, the American Legion and the Lions of La Habra, and the Boy and Girl Scouts are contributing photos, documents, and special artifacts.

Grand Opening Oct 9-10, 2010

We had a wonderfully fun opening weekend on the 9th and 10th.

The La Habra High School Class of 1960 had a great special exhibit for their 50th Reunion and tons of alumni stopped by to see the photos, articles, kilts, pompoms, and videos highlighting that memorable year.

The permanent exhibit's Windows in Time were also a hit with visitors as they remembered how the rooster in the Farm Window would wake them up in the morning; commented on how the typewriter in the Early Business Window looked so bulky and heavy compared to today's laptops; and how fashion hasn't changed all that much over the years looking at the Home Life Window's flapper dress and shoes. The large mural and mural timeline also added rich detail to La Habra's history.

The general store featured Brownie, the German shepherd who accompanied OT Stephens around town reminding businessmen to attend the Kiwanis meetings, and the theater showed an endless loop of videographies.

The museum will be open from 12 noon to 4 p.m. on Saturdays, so please stop by and see what everyone is talking about.

We had a fun opening on Saturday for the Corn Festival. April Baxter, Dorothy Knox, and the great volunteers who came by and gave their time for your viewing pleasure did a wonderful job welcoming visitors.

We would especially like to thank Alison Burnett, our intern this year, for all the incredibly long hours she has donated working together with us on the exhibits. A HUGE thank you for your always-cheery disposition, your endless energy, and especially for coming back day after day after day as we worked hard to get projects done. We want to wish you all sorts of good times in San Francisco this Fall when you start on your master's degree in Museum Studies. In the meantime... we hope to see you back in the Main Room for a few more weeks...

A big 'Thank You' to the members of the Boys and Girls Club of La Habra who also donated time and energy to putting labels on our cans in the General Store. You were a big help and we hope you got to stop by and see the beautiful results of your labor.

The truth is that it takes many, many people many, many hours, to make a museum come together successfully. Thanks to everyone who has contributed, in so many different ways, to making our museum the best it can be.

Our building project in the Main Room is looking great with new walls and display areas. Our curved timeline wall is coming along fine, as well.

Building up the Main Room

We are now in the process of building up the Main Room. New walls and display cases will give the space movement and definition for our permanent exhibit. Thank you to local La Habran Marty Lorigan for his help with the build-up.

Don't throw out those empty metal food cans! We are still taking empty cans so that we "can" cover them with reproductions of period food labels and place them in the General Store, so please save them for us! You can drop them off on Monday and Wednesday mornings from 9:00 a.m. to noon at the downstairs research center.

Please look through your attic, closets, nooks and crannies for anything that belongs in the General Store. Let's fill up those shelves!

The new chairs look great in the theater and we are adding the finishing touches to that wonderful video exhibit space.

We are also looking forward to hosting a very special exhibit in October. Stay tuned!

Citrus Fair

We introduced the new South wall displays on the Indian, Mission, and Rancho eras.

Many visitors to the Citrus Fair (which highlighted La Habra's citrus and avocado history) stopped by to visit the museum. They got a chance to try out the new theater and the wonderful video interviews by Jim Gomez.

Artist Matt Southgate was on hand to talk to visitors about his mural and timeline panels.

The La Habra Historical Museum will highlight the Hass Avocado Tree.

Memories fill the basement of a 64-year-old adobe building in La Habra that once housed a local library.

A couple of oil-burning smudge pots – likely used decades ago in the city to prevent fruit trees from suffering frost damage – lay sideways on a shelf.

They're placed by an antique bicycle with an oversized front wheel, a wooden school desk, a telephone switchboard, a fireman's suit from the 1930s, a piece of the trunk of an avocado tree, old maps, yearbooks and mountains of family photos of folks wearing clothes that were probably stylish in the 1920s.

These artifacts will be displayed in such a way as to tell a story about a community where children commuted to school on the backs of donkeys and ostrich farms were a common sight.

The soon-to-open La Habra Historical Museum will serve as a center for collecting, preserving and interpreting historical artifacts as they pertain to La Habra and the surrounding communities, said museum director Carlotta Haider.

"Local museums are very popular in the U.S.," Haider said. "Every town is invested in its history."

Visitors will get their first peek into the museum, which has been in the works for about six years, during an open house from noon to 6 p.m. Aug. 8 during the La Habra Corn Festival. A soft opening is planned for Oct 17.

The La Habra Old Settlers Historical Society, which founded the museum and has roots dating back to 1898, will operate the museum, said president Kent Roberts. It will focus on La Habra's history from the late 1800s through the 1950s.

"It will give people a place to get a real sense of history," he said.

Most of the artifacts were donated by members of the historical society, which has a membership of about 1,000, including many descendants of the founding group.

One of the exhibits will showcase the history of the Hass (commonly misspelled Haas) Avocado Tree.

According to the historical society, postman Rudolph Hass of La Habra Heights purchased the tree as a seedling in 1926 and planted it in his front yard. Hass named the tree after himself and received a patent in 1935. To this day, all Hass avocados can be traced back to grafts from that mother tree, which died in 2002.

The society also owns nearly every issue of the La Habra Star Progress newspaper from 1916 to 1957.

Roberts hopes to have the issues scanned and available to the public digitally.

Funding, however, is still an ongoing issue.

The museum project received a $30,000 grant from Fourth District County Supervisor Chris Norby, a $45,000 federal grant for community development and about $125,000 from members of the historical society, Roberts said.

The city owns and maintains the building, which it leases to the historical society for $1 per year.

As is the case with many local museums, the La Habra museum will staff itself with volunteers and enlist college students to help with research and designing exhibits.

The museum will likely be open at least three days per week and admission will be free.

"Hopefully, this will make history relevant to people." Haider said. "There is a connection between then and now. … We are here because we were there."

Estos artefactos serán exhibidos de tal modo que cuenten la historia de una comunidad en donde los niños asistían a la escuela a lomo de burro y criaderos de avestruces eran de vista corriente.

The La Habra Historical Museum also announces a Soft Opening on Saturday, October 17, 2009. This first exhibition will highlight elements of the future permanent exhibit.

The La Habra Historical Museum, founded by the La Habra Old Settlers Historical Society, will serve as a center for gathering, preserving, and interpreting significant historical artifacts, including photos, charts, maps, and books, for the purpose of educating and developing an appreciation of La Habra's past. Its mission is to enhance the knowledge of La Habra's heritage by providing attractive and accessible exhibits and related programs emphasizing the understanding of the many historical eras in the community's development from the days of the missions, through the various agricultural periods, the discovery of oil, and the formation of the city and its growth through the decades.

The La Habra Historical Museum encourages the public to stop by the Open House to see the new windmill, meet members of the La Habra Old Settlers Historical Society and the museum staff, and for a glimpse into upcoming exhibits.

Bienvenidos al Museo Histórico de La Habra

El Museo Histórico de La Habra (La Habra Historical Museum) va a ofrecer una Casa Abierta (Open House) para el Festival del Maíz (Corn Festival) de 2009 de La Habra, desde las 12 del mediodía hasta las 6 de la tarde. Luego de muchos años de preparación y de renovaciones del edificio, el Museo Histórico de La Habra (La Habra Historical Museum), en City Hall Park, ha contratado personal de museo y ha planeado exhibiciones de apertura. La nueva Directora, Carlota F. Haider, y conservadora, Tina Hasenberg, estarán disponibles para responder a preguntas y atender a sugestiones de la comunidad para futuras exhibiciones.

El Museo Histórico de La Habra (La Habra Historical Museum) anuncia también una “Soft Opening” para el Sábado 17 de Octubre de 2009. Esta primera exhibición va a destacar elementos de la futura exhibición permanente.
